An Introduction

Hi,

Welcome to my blog.

I’m Lorna Thurgood, currently a student in my final year of BA (Hons) English at Bournemouth University. To introduce myself simply, I’m a health-orientated horse rider from West Sussex and aside from that, pretty much your average 22 year old dying for this year of Covid to be over so that I can go back out clubbing.

I’ve created this blog in order to explore journalism and the issues surrounding it, as I’m hoping to work in this field in the future and want to develop my understanding of the industry.

I chose to study English as a degree because writing has always been one of my strengths and something I enjoy. I also think it’s extremely important that people study English and Journalism in the 21st century, since the age of the internet has meant that nearly anyone can become a ‘writer’, but that consequently much of the content published is inaccurate, poorly written or misinformed.

In 2019 I was lucky enough to work for a magazine publishing company for the second half of the year, which I will elaborate on in my next post. Once I’d come to terms with the 5am starts, I was thrown into very hands-on journalism and came to recognise how fast paced and competitive the industry is, constantly adapting to new social climates and technologies. This further inspired me to investigate journalism in a broader context.

With publishing and advertising (and myself) going mad for Christmas amid a devastating pandemic, this is an interesting time to be observing the current issues and debates that are pervading the media, many of which I will be analysing in my upcoming dissertation.

I hope you enjoy my posts as much as I’ll enjoy writing them!
